A Swansea company is urging local, professional LGV and PVC drivers to stop burying their heads in the sand when it comes to the training required to hold a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) status.
Aartic LGV Training Services, which was established in April by brothers Adrian and Anthony Rabey, has been contacting local company fleet managers to remind them of the deadline for this European Directive which came into force in several years ago. Its aim is to maintain high standards of driving and improve road safety throughout the European Union.
The legislation states that if you drive a bus, coach or minibus with nine or more passenger seats, or a lorry weighing over 3.5 tonnes, for a living, you must hold a Driver CPC status. Professional drivers who want to keep their Driver CPC status will need to complete at least 35 hours of approved, periodic training (7 hours per year) over every five-year period of their driving career. Periodic training involves attending courses on various aspects of professional driving.
Existing professional bus and coach drives (PSV licence holders) must complete this periodic training by 9th September 2013; whilst the completion date for lorry drivers (LGV licence holders) is 9th September 2014. New drivers must complete their first cycle of periodic training within 5 years of the date they first acquired their driver CPC.
The Aartic LGV Training Services Directors explained, “the aim of Driver CPC periodic training is to provide continuing professional development for bus, coach and lorry drivers and to improve their knowledge and skills throughout their career. But far too many are ignoring this legislation in the hope that it will go away and assuming current qualifications are enough. But this isn’t the case.
“Companies and individual drivers need allow themselves enough time to complete the periodic training within the five year period or they will lose their licences. There’s no advantage to delaying as the new five year training period will simply kick in again from the expiry date of their current Driver CPC qualification.”
Driver CPC is intended to complement the individual driver’s work and to be relevant to their everyday job. Approved courses range from manual handling techniques, vehicle load restraining, first aid, health and safety, drivers’ hours regulations and tachographs.
There is no requirement for a course to include a test but most professional training organisations will be offering the Master Driver CPC qualification in conjunction with the RTITB* which includes a multiple choice assessment at the end of each module to ensure that the knowledge has been retained and understood by each candidate.
The Aartic Directors added, “all our courses include the Master Driver CPC qualification as this gives the drivers trained by us entry on the Master Drivers Registration database so they can trace their training and prove their attendance. We have also developed our training modules so that they can be split into 3.5 hour sessions over 24 hours allowing flexibility according to individual business’s needs, policies and procedures. We can even add company specific details to their JAUPT ** approved courses for bespoke relevant training.
“Even though we can host training at our City Centre training facility, if it’s more convenient for the drivers we can run the courses at their own site. So essentially, we are making it as easy as possible for local companies who employ commercial drivers to complete the Driver CPC training before it’s too late and the legislation finally catches up with them.”
